RAG vs Fine-Tuning: How to Make an LLM Work with Your Company Data

By Digiators Consulting Services · October 17, 2026 · 6 min read

Large language models know a lot about the world but nothing about your pricing, policies or internal documents. Two techniques close that gap: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and fine-tuning. They are often confused, and choosing the wrong one wastes time and money.

What is RAG?

With RAG, the system searches your documents when a question arrives, passes the most relevant passages to the model and asks it to answer using only that material. Your data stays in a searchable index, and the model stays unchanged. Learn more about our RAG development services.

What is fine-tuning?

Fine-tuning continues training a model on examples so it adopts a style, format or specialist behavior. It changes how the model responds, not what facts it can look up.

How they differ

  • Fresh knowledge: RAG updates the moment you update a document. Fine-tuned knowledge goes stale until you retrain.
  • Accuracy and sources: RAG can cite where an answer came from. Fine-tuned models cannot.
  • Cost and speed: RAG is usually quicker and cheaper to start. Fine-tuning needs curated training data and evaluation.
  • Tone and format: fine-tuning is better for consistent voice, structured outputs or narrow tasks.

When to choose RAG

  • Answers must reflect current documents, policies or product data.
  • You need traceable sources for trust or compliance.
  • Content differs by user and requires access control.

When to fine-tune

  • You need a consistent writing style or output format.
  • The task is narrow and repetitive, such as classification.
  • Prompts alone cannot reach the quality you need.

Best practice: start with RAG

  1. Collect and clean your source documents.
  2. Split them into meaningful chunks and index them with embeddings.
  3. Retrieve, rerank and answer with citations.
  4. Evaluate with real questions and track accuracy.
  5. Consider fine-tuning only if gaps remain.

Frequently asked questions

Can we use both RAG and fine-tuning?

Yes. Many production systems use RAG for facts and a lightly tuned model for tone and format.

Is our data safe with RAG?

It can be, with private indexes, access control, encryption and a model provider that does not train on your data. We design for this from the start.
